So, you are getting ready for your senior year? This crazy phase of your life is going to be filled with lots of lasts as you close the chapter on high school, and lots of firsts as you step into college and adulthood. This season is so special, and because of this, you are probably putting a lot of pressure on yourself to capture the “perfect” senior photos. But don’t worry, I’ll let you in on some tips and tricks that can help you bring your vision to life! Check out these x tips & tricks for your senior session!
1. Gather Inspo!
Senior sessions come in all sorts of styles/themes. In a field, the city, the beach, a studio and so much more, it feels like the options are vast and endless. This can be overwhelming in itself, and lead to a session that looks all over the place or is not exactly what you were hoping for. To combat this I highly encourage my clients to gather some inspiration on what they are hoping their session will look like. This can be done through Pinterest, Google, Instagram, or even Tik Tok. Once you have gathered inspiration, you can use this to create a mood board, or share with your photographer to get you both on the same page.
2. Outfits & Styling
Your outfit and styling is a huuuugeeee part of your session for a couple of reasons.
First it helps you encapsulate your original vision. Once you pick what theme or vibe you are going for, styling is an incredibly important facet to use to bring your vision to life! For example, you want to take your images in a field, with a boho/cottage core vibe about them. To accomplish this, you can wear a long, flowy gown, and bring props like flowers, picnic baskets, or hair scarfs.
Not only this, but your outfits and styling can really make your session stand out from your peers. Wearing something that no one else is wearing gives your images a unique look that no one else will have. For example, instead of wearing something you can get at any store, or something you would wear on a day-to-day basis, try going online or thrifting something bold or out of the box. This could be a poof dress, a glittery/colorful pantsuit, a long dramatic gown or a super cool jacket.
As far as styling and props goes, do not be afraid to use them. Styling with props can help tell the story of YOU. Bringing books if you are a reader, paint brushes and paint if you are an artist, or your sports gear if you are an athlete can make your senior photos more personal. By utilizing these sort of outfits and styling pieces, your session will be elevated to another level.
3. Hair, Makeup & Nails
Utilizing hair, makeup and nails as a tool to feel your best can be really helpful for your senior session. While you do not need to get these professionally done, if you are anything like me, trying to do it all on your own can be a little stressful. Thankfully there are some awesome professionals out there that can help. The goal of getting professional hair and makeup done is to help highlight your natural beauty, and make you feel even more comfortable in front of the camera. It also helps alleviate some stress from the getting ready process, and turns that stress into a fun pampering experience. When getting your hair and makeup done , you will partner with an artist that will give you a consult where you can plan out the perfect look with each other. You can pick something you know you love and feel comfortable in and feel super ready for your session date. As far as nails go your hands are often showing in detail shots, and in certain poses. You may want to touch up your manicure to ensure your nails are looking clean and polished.
Location, Location, Location!!! This is SUCH a staple part of your senior session! Choosing the right location can really make your vision come to life. For example, if you want a super boho/cottage core style session, you’re going to want to shoot your session in a field, a greenhouse, a old farm etc. By choosing a location thats cohesive with your vision, you will really be able to elevate your images and make them more unique.
There are many different ways to find a ~different~ location. One way is, if you are out and about and see somewhere super cool youd like to shoot around, drop a pin, take some pictures, and shoot it over to your photographer! Another cool way to find a fun location is by traveling to another city. For example, if you live in Houston, Tx you could travel over to Austin, Tx and shoot somewhere totally different than where your local peers are shooting. Furthermore, another cool thing that people don’t think about a lot is, if you are going on vacation somewhere cool, think about seeing if your photographer wants to travel along! This is a really easy way to have some unique and different images. and nine times out of ten us photographers wanna TRAVEL. Lastly, if your photographer travels often, they may have a travel list in their bio of where they are going to next. Reach out and see if you can shoot with them in these locations!
5. Bring a friend 🙂
Sometimes, having a camera in your face can feel a little daunting. Not only this, but during your session, you may have lots of things to carry, need help changing your outfits, and so much more. Bringing a friend can help ease your anxiety, make you feel more excited, supported, and hyped up for your session. They can also be extra hands for all of your things and help you where you may need it. I always love an extra hype man at my sessions 😉
In the end however, the main thing you should keep in mind when it comes to your senior session is to BE YOU. Do what speaks to you, and leave what doesn’t. The beauty is, you can apply all of these 5 tips and tricks in many different ways that fit what YOU need. Now go smash your senior sesh 😉
